  • DIY Laundry Powder

If you are anything like us as a family of 5, we do atleast a load or more of laundry a day!!! We go through laundry detergent so fast that we are spending around $50 a month on laundry supplies. In the world we live in these days we have been trying to cut cost corners where we can so let me show you a quick DIY laundry powder to save you some money!! I spent $18 on what will more than likely last me 3 months and you could easily double the recipe!!!

I grabbed a 20quart tub at walmart for around $5 to put this in because the recipe makes about 10lbs of powder. All of the ingredients can be found at walmart but incase you are more of an amazon shopper i will have the list in my cart here.https://amzn.to/41vbTnM

Below is a picture for reference.

List of supplies you will need.

    Not brand specific

    • 1 box of Borax laundry booster
    • 1 box of laundry washing soda (i used arm and hammer)
    • 1 box of baking soda (i used arm and hammer)
    • 1 Fels-naptha soap bar stain remover (unscented if sensitive)
    • any scent boost beads (i used purex crystals but whatever your favorite scent is)
    • container
    • wooden spoon ( for mixing)
    • cheese grater (for the soap bar)

The only actual work in this DIY is making sure your Felsnaptha bar is grated into the mixture. It needs to be fairly small to mix in correctly. I have even seen people use a chopper or a food processor for this but i found the grater worked just fine. Obviously its dedicated to my DIY cabinet now but thats ok because i will be making this on repeat. Once that is grated up in your container, open everything up and pour it in and mix it all up really good and VIOLA! Your very own laundry powder to last you for months!!!

Thanks for the visit, Happy DIYing

  • In My Homemade Era

I love Mondays now that I don’t have a regular 9-5 job. I have been spending them making fresh sourdough for the week, fresh butter, this week ketchup and ranch!! All of these things will be going into a separate blog post this week with recipes along with my sourdough discard soft sandwich loaf (a quick 3 hour one).

Today while it was pretty and warm out i decided we could go ahead and grab our seeds for the garden and start those inside since the groundhog said we have 6 weeks. Sounds about like the perfect amount of time to get these babies grown and ready for the fresh tilled yard right?? So take this as your reminder if you are putting a garden in this year, get those seeds started because they need to go in the ground right after the last frost of winter. Especially if you have early things like broccoli or carrots. I cant wait to show you the layout and the plans for this years garden. Since i will be home and are trying to get back to homesteading we will have double the vegetables we usually have. More to come on garden things but here i will link our favorite seeds so that you can get started , also i found some starter boxes with soil prefilled for $6.99 at Rural King, whhhattt??

Link above is for a starter variety pack of the Burpee brand we also use of seeds every year! Click to have them shipped to you this week to get started!!

On another note while we discuss the Homemade era, we have had chickens for YEARS, I don’t know lets say 8. We had no idea what it was like spending money on eggs and OH MY GOODNESS. We just lost our last of the old hens due to the last snow, it got too frigid for them. So today, while shopping for seeds we also grabbed a whole flock of 8 new chicks before they were gone. The lady that helped us said they have already sold out of many type the last few days. What is really going on, an egg shortage and now chickens flying off the shelf too? lol We always had Wyandotte so we did get a few of those and a new chicken breed to us, black onyx. Cant wait to watch them Grow!!

The chicks will stay inside a few more weeks before putting them in the coop, sad it will be 4-6 months now before we have our own eggs again though. Thank you for checking in with us, Have a Blessed week and see you back with some recipes soon! – Amanda

  • DIY pantry from the closet under the stairs.

Since I have time off now, thanks to only needing to do part-time hair and work on content creating for brands, I can finally do some things I have wanted to do!

This week we got to go thrifting and i found some Mccoy treasures and a 4 tier shelf from Aldi so, I had this idea to turn my weird little space under the stairs into a bakers pantry! We just stored odd and end things in the closet since it also houses our hot water heater. So we put together the shelfing system and it fit like a glove!

This ended up being the perfect size for all of my dutch ovens and sourdough baking supplies. Even the hubby and kids were excited about this DIY. (They gripe about my dutch ovens and baking “stuff” being all over the kitchen) Now everything has its place and im so glad I had the day off to get this done! It is everything i hoped it would be!

After my thrifting haul, I incorporated the finds into my baking pantry which made it a vintage dream closet and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! Here are some of my thrifts and how I styled them.

I would love to find a vintage canister set for my flour and sugar that fits the vintage vibe in here. Something to look forward to on my next thrifting trip! I just wanted to share this idea with you incase you too had some unused space that could be turned into something practical and a creative useful space. Sometimes you don’t need a bigger house, you just need to think outside of the box! Go make something! Love you bye.

  • Goodmorning friends. New year new Barton house!

I am just getting back into the swing of things since i started the new year off sick. No better way to spend this Friday than baking, catching up on hairdos from being out, and starting a blog. Who even am I?? I actually wanted to take this post to introduce myself. My name is Amanda, I am a hairdresser, and a nurse, and now entrepreneur. Thats weird to say. My life looks totally different this week as i am transitioning home. No more nursing for a while. A few days of hair and the rest of the week I can literally do what I want which has been consisting of lots of Tiktok content for brands and personal growth, i also wrote an Ebook on sourdough already this year, so weird. I plan to get us back on track financially by saving money and making a lot of what we use at home. As i mentioned i bake, a lot of sourdough so bread weekly is a must. I am now making our butter, this week our ketchup. Its exciting getting back to this. I am not going to lie, when the world was shut down during covid and we had our chickens and sheep to take care of daily, our garden that produced enough to keep us and i was at home, it was the best time I’ve had. Without the world shut down and the covid part, that is my Goal this year. The Rich life, if you know what i mean. I am married to a firefighter so being the sole parent at home is challenging sometimes but i wouldn’t change it for anything. We love our Hero. The plan was to take you all along with us while we learn to make all the things and inspire you to grow and make your own food as well. There will be other fun stuff thrown in along the way. I cant wait to really get started. Love you bye.
